UUID Decoder & Inspector
Decode a UUID or GUID to see its version, variant, format and timestamp (where supported). Inspect your identifier instantly, right in your browser.
Accepts 36-character UUID, 32 hex digits, {braces} or urn:uuid: notation. Input stays in your browser.
Copy UUID formats
| Format | Value | Action |
|---|
These formats represent the same 128-bit UUID. A UUID does not prove who created it or when it was generated unless its version actually encodes time.
How to decode a UUID online
Paste your identifier into the UUID Decoder above. The inspector recognizes the standard hexadecimal UUID format and shows its version, variant and canonical form. For versions 1, 6 and 7 it can also interpret the timestamp embedded in the identifier.
Unlike a UUID lookup service for Minecraft profiles or application databases, this tool reads only the bits inside your UUID. It cannot retrieve a user, account, owner, or database record from an arbitrary UUID.
What information can a UUID reveal?
| UUID type | What can be decoded? | Timestamp? |
|---|---|---|
| v1 | Gregorian-based timestamp, clock sequence, node field | Yes |
| v3 / v5 | Version and variant; hashed namespace/name cannot be reversed | No |
| v4 | Version, variant, random bytes | No |
| v6 | Reordered Gregorian-based timestamp, clock sequence, node field | Yes |
| v7 | 48-bit Unix timestamp in milliseconds | Yes |
| v8 | Application-defined fields; meaning needs its custom specification | Not generally |
| Nil / Max | All-zero or all-one special UUID | No |
A timestamp extracted from a UUID is encoded data, not proof of the time an event actually occurred. Similarly, v1/v6 node bits are not necessarily a real MAC address.
UUID Decoder vs UUID Validator
A UUID Validator answers, “Does this input match the supported UUID format and version rules?” A UUID Decoder goes further and shows the meaning of its version, variant and available time fields. Use the UUID Validator for straightforward validity checks and this decoder for technical inspection.
UUID and GUID commonly refer to the same 128-bit identifier structure; some Microsoft APIs use different in-memory byte order for certain fields. The common text representation remains the familiar five-group hexadecimal UUID.
Frequently asked questions
Can I decode a UUID v4 to find its creation date?
No. A standard UUID v4 contains random bits and version/variant markers, not a creation timestamp.
How do I decode a UUID v7 timestamp?
UUID v7 stores a 48-bit Unix timestamp in milliseconds in its first 12 hexadecimal digits. This tool converts those bits to a readable UTC time.
Can a UUID decoder find the person or account behind an ID?
No. General UUID values do not contain an owner’s identity. Resolving an ID to an account needs access to the specific application or database that issued it.
Is the UUID sent to a server?
No. This tool parses UUID values in your browser. The website may load its regular page resources, but this decoder does not transmit pasted UUID values to an API.
How many characters does a UUID have?
A standard hyphenated UUID has 36 characters: 32 hexadecimal digits plus four hyphens. Its binary size is always 128 bits or 16 bytes.
Are Nil and Max UUIDs valid?
Yes. RFC 9562 defines an all-zero Nil UUID and an all-one Max UUID as special values. Applications may still reject them as meaningful record identifiers.
